Two recent flubs by media members have been brought up. One (a crass, but unplanned remark) will get you suspended. One (a crass and planned skit) will not. It’s all about who’s being offended.
While I agree you shouldn’t use the word “lynch” when describing how competitors should defeat a black athlete, I’m not sure how it’s more acceptable to speak of “deep-fried Christ” in an attempt to make fun of overweight people (or one who used to be), Southerners, evangelicals, Catholics and who knows how many other groups.
That being said, I’m never quick to join in the “fire ’em all” bandwagon. I think having morons on the air tends to help those whom the morons are trying to attack.
